Japan’s Naomi Osaka has taken out the US Open women’s final but the match will be remembered for a running battle between Serena Williams and the umpire over cheating claims.
Williams lost the match in straight sets 6-2 6-4 with Osaka gaining the edge in the second set after the American tennis star was handed a game penalty for three code violations.
A furious Williams called for the tournament referee Brian Earley after umpire Carlos Ramos had warned her for being coached by Patrick Mouratoglou in the stands.
“You will never, ever, ever be on another court of mine as long as you live,” Williams fumed at Ramos during the match.
“You are the liar. When are you going to give me my apology? You owe me an apology. Say it. Say you’re sorry. … And you stole a point from me. You’re a thief, too!”
