The lightweight title bout was the main event of the UFC 205 event at Madison Square Garden in New York. It aired on pay-per-view following prelims on FS1 and UFC Fight Pass.
McGregor (21-3 MMA, 9-1 UFC) took the fight over from the opening moments, smacking Alvarez (28-5 MMA, 3-2 UFC) with clean punches and scoring multiple knockdowns in the opening round. Whenever Alvarez appeared to get any degree of comfort, McGregor blasted him again.
At the 3:04 mark of Round 2, the fight was over because the featherweight champ blasted Alvarez with a four-punch combination, scoring a knockdown and forcing the referee to stop the damage.
