UAAP Season 79 RECAP

Ahanmisi already had 13 points to lead upstart Adamson to an eight-point advantage at the half, but turned up the heat even more come the third. There, he poured in 13 points to front the 20-9 tear that turned their halftime advantage into a 66-47 lead.

Still, the Maroons kept coming and closed to within 77-83 inside the last five minutes before Sean Manganti’s monstrous two-handed jam highlighted a 21-8 counter that put away, once and for all, the Falcons’ season-opening win.

Ahanmisi’s total was the highest by a debuting player since Jeron Teng’s 35 points in his first game for De La Salle University in 2012. “Now, everyone knows who Jerrick Ahanmisi is,” a proud coach Franz Pumaren said in his post-game conference.

Manganti, another of Pumaren’s prized prospects, ended up with eight points and three rebounds while fellow rookie Rob Manalang also shone with 16 points and nine assists. “I am confident with these guys. They are smart enough,” Pumaren said, referring to his first-year players.

For UP, it was Paul Desiderio who topped the scoring column with 24 points. However, a defense that allowed their opponents to make 66 percent of their shots downed them into a 0-1 standing.
