Import Eugene Phelps collected 29 points and 26 rebounds as his monster numbers carried the Phoenix Fuel Masters to a 93-81 win over the struggling Blackwater Elite in the PBA Governors’ Cup Wednesday at Ynares Center in Antipolo.
Phelps also helped spark a late fourth quarter run that ultimately held off the Elite (1-8) who are now eliminated from contention after suffering their seventh straight loss.
Mark Borboran had a surprise contribution of 15 points, while Simon Enciso and Cyrus Baguio tallied 12 and 10 points, respectively, for the Fuel Masters (5-4) who strengthened their grip on the No.6 spot.
Phoenix remained in the driver’s seat but Blackwater stayed close. But Phelps and Enciso ignited a 9-2 fourth quarter run that handed them a 10-point lead, 74-64.
The Fuel Masters maintained their advantage for the rest of the way and never let the Elite mount a serious run.
Art Dela Cruz and Carlo Lastimosa scored 18 points apiece for the now-eliminated Blackwater which, despite having two games left on its schedule, couldn’t catch up anymore with the current No.8 seed Rain or Shine (4-5).
New Elite import Keala King had a modest outing of 14 points and eight boards in his PBA debut.
