UAAP Season 79 RECAP
FEU had two chances to grab the lead for their own, but Jojo Trinidad, Prince Orizu, and Wendell Comboy all muffed on their shots. Following a split from the stripe by Ben Mbala, Teng then took over and outscored all of their opponents by his lonesome, 7-4.
Teng also collared eight rebounds while the debuting Mbala lived up to his billing as an interior terror and wound up with 13 points, 23 rebounds, and four blocks. “Sasandalan ko ‘tong mga haligi, but we also have role players,” Ayo said.
Indeed, the fully-loaded lineup also showed up with everybody from rookie Aljun Melecio and his 10 points to veteran Julian Sargent and his outstanding defense contributing.
The matchup between the defending champions and the title favorites was the most-anticipated of the year following the two teams’ tuneup game last month that was called off for getting too intense. “We have overcome it already and for me, trabaho lang naman ‘to, walang personalan ‘to,” Ayo said.
The Tamaraws’ valiant stand was fronted by Ron Dennison who had 13 points to lead four other teammates in double-digits. The balanced attack, however, was no match for their fully-loaded opponents and their title defense got off on the wrong foot.
