A Mark Barroca triple handed the Hotshots a 75-74 lead with 7:13 remaining. That was however followed by a free throw split from Taulava, a triple from Walker and a jumper from Villanueva to help the Road Warriors regain the lead, 80-76.

Walker then scored five straight points to pad NLEX’s lead, 85-79, with just 1:57 remaining.

Star, however, came within two points, 85-83, with 56.2 seconds left after layups by Wright and Marc Pingris.

NLEX slightly opened the door for a Star comeback after Villanueva missed the second of his free throws. But instead of calling a timeout with 16 seconds left, the Hotshots decided to run quickly with Barroca leading the fastbreak.

But the veteran guard missed his layup. Asi Taulava sank two free throws, but NLEX’s lead was just three points.

Rodrigue Akl then missed two shots from the charity stripe with three seconds left, giving Star a golden chance to send the game into overtime.


The Star Hot SHots picked up a 1 victory after losing 3 times in the 2016 Oppo PBA Governors’ Cup last game match-up against San Miguel Beermen on PBA game #21, 109-100, on Sunday July 31, 2016 at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.

But the Hotshots blew another opportunity, as they failed to find a decent look which led Barroca to hoist a tough triple that didn’t go in.
