Philippines vs Egypt – William Jones Cup | July 30, 2016 Replay

Philippines-Mighty Sports needed a late run to stave off a tough Egypt squad, 80-61, and near a sweep of the 2016 William Jones Cup Saturday at Xinzhuang Stadium in Taiwan.

Al Thornton finished with 20 points and 15 rebounds to spearhead PH-Mighty Sports again which notched its seventh straight victory of the tournament.

Dewarick Spencer scored 19 points while Mike Singletary chipped in 11 markers.

Filipino player Edrick Ferrer sank three straight triples in the dying seconds of the game to score nine points.

Playing its seventh straight game in as many days, PH-Mighty Sports got its toughest game yet against Egypt which kept the game close until the fourth period.

PH-Mighty Sports built a 33-22 lead in the second quarter, but Egypt didn’t back down and stayed within striking distance at the break, 35-28.

Egypt finally took the lead, 47-45, in the third quarter but Singletary and Thornton quickly erased that with a 7-0 run that put PH-Mighty Sports ahead, 52-47, entering the final frame.

PH-Mighty Sports finally dispatched Egypt in the fourth quarter in a decisive 14-0 run highlighted by a Thornton layup off a nifty outlet pass from Singletary. That play gave them a comfortable 65-53 lead with just 3:22 left.

Coming off the bench, Ferrer provided the dagger by firing three consecutive triples.

PH-Mighty Sports, already assured of the Jones Cup crown, will face Chinese Taipei B on Sunday to wrap up its campaign.
