The Barangay Gineba San Miguel Kings, thanks to strong showings from import Justin Brownlee and Sol Mercado, picked up a huge victory over the Meralco Bolts, 107-93, in the Oppo PBA Governors’ Cup on Saturday at the Quezon Convention Center in Lucena.

Brownlee led all scorers with 26 points while also dishing out a team-high six assists. Mercado scored 19 points on 5-for-6 shooting from the field, 3-for-3 from three-point range and 6-for-7 from the free throw line. He also dished out four assists.

Japeth Aguilar chipped in with 15 markers while Mark Caguioa added 13.

Ginebra improved to 3-1 after notching their second straight win while Meralco dropped to 2-2.

Ginebra got off to a strong start behind LA Tenorio, Aguilar and Brownlee, who carried the scoring load. A couple of three-pointers from Mercado and Joe Devance and another basket from Aguilar gave the Kings a whopping 16-point lead, 30-14.

They ended the first quarter with a double-digit lead, 32-21.

But Meralco mounted a comeback in the second quarter after a terrific performance from Jonathan Uyloan, who hit three three-pointers and dished out two assists, including an alley-oop lob to Chris Newsome for a huge jam, in a span of over six minutes where the Bolts outscored the Kings, 19-8, to come back to within three points, 45-42.

Barangay Ginebra led Meralco, 51-47, at the half with Brownlee already with 14 points and Aguilar adding 10.

The Bolts tied the game, 68-apiece, with three minutes remaining in the third after a Jimmy Alapag three-pointer.

But Ginebra closed the period on a 13-3 run, punctuated by two huge plays from Caguioa, including a three-point play to end the quarter, giving his Kings an 81-71 advantage.

Meralco battled back yet again as import Allen Durham got the team back to within three, 90-87.

But Mercado scored eight points in a 12-1 run for the Kings. He completed an and-one and hit a three-pointer as the Ginebra lead ballooned to 14 points, 102-88, with 1:53 remaining in the game.

Reynel Hugnatan hit a free throw before Aguilar sealed it with another trey, 105-89, in the final minute.
