Ginebra waxes hot late, dispatches NLEX for win No.2, Barangay Ginebra San Miguel returned to the winning track, needing a fourth quarter rally to trounce the NLEX Road Warriors, 85-72, in the 2016 OPPO PBA Governors’ Cup Wednesday at SMART-Araneta Coliseum.
Justin Brownlee scored 24 points and 14 rebounds to help Ginebra recover from its last loss and improve to 2-1.
Japeth Aguilar finished with 14 points and also contributed huge baskets down the stretch that ignited Ginebra’s late rally.
Joe Devance and LA Tenorio also contributed 10 points apiece. Scottie Thompson, the only rookie to be named a PBA All-Star starter this year, collected eight points, 12 rebounds and four assists.
Ginebra pulled away in the final quarter after a 16-3 run sparked by Brownlee’s back-to-back triples.
Aguilar followed it with five straight points and Devance joined the fray with a booming triple and a layup. After those plays, a 57-all deadlock suddenly became a 73-60 lead with 6:34 remaining.
NLEX tried to mount a comeback after four unanswered points from Enrico Villanueva and Henry Walker. But Brownlee responded with an and one, dousing the Road Warriors uprising.
Walker paced the Road Warriors with 18 points and 13 boards. Sean Anthony was the only other NLEX player in double digits with 14 markers.
NLEX, which missed the services of the suspended Asi Taulava who got into a fight last outing, suffered its second straight loss to settle for a 1-2 slate.
