The Meralco Bolts continued their surprising start to the tournament as they nipped the Phoenix Fuel Masters, 90-87, for their fourth straight win in the OPPO PBA Commissioner’s Cup Sunday at SMART-Araneta Coliseum.

Import Arinze Onuaku piled up 17 points and 18 boards while Chris Newsome added 16 markers to help Meralco notch a 4-0 start.

Gary David also contributed 13 points while Jared Dillinger scored 10, including a crucial triple down the stretch that gave the Bolts the lead for good.

Meralco had to erase a 12-point deficit early. Behind the Fuel Masters’ hot shooting from downtown, the league newcomers grabbed a 42-30 lead with 4:59 left in the second period.

That thanks to RR Garcia who finished with 11 points in the first quarter where Phoenix led by four, 23-19.

But Meralco launched a 12-2 run in the third period to come within one, 55-54, in the third frame and it became a close fight from then on.

After a seesaw battle, the Bolts finally took the lead, 71-69, after a Kelly Nabong putback early in the final frame.

The game was still tied at 86-all before Dillinger buried another triple to give Meralco the lead, 89-86, with 45.5 seconds left.

The Bolts however struggled to close the game after missing three of their next four free throws. A Newsome split put Meralco ahead, 90-87, with two seconds left, opening the door for Phoenix to tie the game.

But Josh Urbiztondo’s triple was blocked by Onuaku in the end.

Phoenix (1-1) was led by Garcia’s 15 markers.
