Hobbled Othyus Jeffers piles up 38 and 20 as Ginebra rips Rain or Shine to pick up 1st win, Jeffers displayed a monstrous performance as the Barangay Ginebra San Miguel barged into the winning column with a 103-92 victory over the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters in the OPPO PBA Commissioner’s Cup Sunday at SMART-Araneta Coliseum.
Jeffers collected 38 points and 20 rebounds, all while playing hurt as he was suffering from back spasms. Greg Slaughter chipped in 16 points and 14 rebounds while Joe Devance and Japeth Aguilar added 13 and 10, respectively, for the Gin Kings who improved to 1-2.
Ginebra pulled away in the second quarter, turning a slim 28-23 lead into a 46-29 cushion thanks to a 18-6 run in the second period.
But Rain or Shine prevented the game from being a blowout as JR Quinahan, who finished with 21 points in the game, kept the Elasto Painters alive with his baskets. His triple with 15 seconds left in the second quarter kept them within nine, 53-44.
However, Ginebra never relinquished the lead as Jeffers played inspired basketball.
Despite visibly wincing in pain while on the court, he carried the Gin Kings throughout the game, scoring huge baskets and making energy plays to douse any threat of a Rain or Shine uprising.
