Gilas Philippines Ranidel De Ocampo against Kuwait Alhamidi full scuffle video replay, 2015 FIBA ASIA CHAMPIONSHIP.
Gilas captain Hontiveros won’t condone De Ocampo’s actions but admits statement had to be made: ‘Hindi tayo magpapabasta basta’.
CHANGSHA – Philippine national men’s basketball team captain Dondon Hontiveros doesn’t have to like teammate Ranidel De Ocampo’s actions to admit that something had to be done about Kuwait’s physicality in their preliminary round match in Group B of the 2015 FIBA Asia Championship.
De Ocampo decided to retaliate against Kuwait’s Abdulaziz Alhamidi, a player that the Gilas Pilipinas players said had taken several cheap shots at them over the course of the 110-64 blowout win for the Philippines, for a punch to his sensitive parts.
When he hit back, though, he left the Kuwaiti player bloodied in the mouth, leading to some exchanges wherein players needed to be separated.
While Hontiveros and the rest of the Filipinos have De Ocampo’s back, the captain admitted that he wasn’t about to condone what his teammate did.
“Hindi natin masasabing tama, hindi natin masasabing nagkulang din,” Hontiveros told InterAksyon.com in an exclusive interview.
“Pero ganun din tayo nung nangyari sa Iran eh. We stood our ground. It might not be the best na reaction pero if that’s the way to respond, to show to other teams that we can stand ground para di na maulit. Then let that be a statement na hindi tayo basta ganun.”
He said that Alhamidi should be the last person to be complaining about dirty play, especially after the actions he made against the Gilas players all game long.
“Ano din kasi yung 12 (Alhamidi) eh. Siya yung nauuna. Good thing nakahanap siya ng match kay Ranidel. Ngayon nagsabi pa sa akin na mag-careful daw yung 33 (De Ocampo). Pero kami, tulungan lang namin si Ranidel na mabantayan,” Hontiveros said.
“Pero coming from that guy na siya na yung nanakit, siya yung nagsasabi ng ganun, parang karma rin for him na binawian siya ni Del tapos natamaan.”
Hontiveros made it clear, though, that he wasn’t saying that De Ocampo made the right decision by retaliating – even if the team may reap some benefits from it.
“Pero yun nga, we won’t condone those kinds of actions pero as a statement, it’s how you can say na hindi tayo magpapa-basta basta.”
