Review: 1. Acer Aspire V 15 Nitro (VN7-591G-75S2) – Minimum Price: ($1,199.99 to $2,099.99 as tested)
The Acer Aspire V 15 Nitro is now available in Malaysia and Singapore at the starting RRP of RM3,699 and SGD1,598 respectively).
Review Aspire V 15 Nitro is outfitted with a 2.5GHz Intel Core i7-4710HQ quad-core processor, the same processor found in both the MSI GS60 Ghost Pro 3K and the Maingear Pulse 15, but only half the memory of those systems, at 8GB of RAM. The resulting performance is still quite good.
It completed PCMark 8 Work Conventional with 3,160 points and finished Photoshop CS6 in just 4 minutes 11 seconds. This is actually better PCMark 8 performance than both the MSI GS60 Ghost Pro 3K (2,988 points) and the Maingear Pulse 15 (3.047 points), but in Photoshop, the MSI GS60 Ghost Pro 3K (3:26) and the Maingear Pulse 15 (3:29) were both faster. However, these scores do put the Aspire V 15 Nitro ahead of other similarly priced gaming laptops, like the Lenovo Y50 Touch, which scored 3,047 points in PCMark 8 and finished Photoshop in 4:20.
Review: 2. Dell Alienware 15 (Early 2015) – Price: ($1,499.99 at tested)
The Alienware 15 is now available at the Dell Malaysia and Singapore online stores with a starting price of RM6,469 and SGD2,199 respectively)
While most gaming systems boast high-end processors, the Alienware 15 sticks with a basic 2.9GHz Intel Core i5-4210H paired with 16GB of RAM. While it’s not the fastest CPU around, it does just fine for gaming, and it’s less expensive than the Intel Core i7 processor you usually find in gaming systems.
You’ll still get solid performance, even in productivity and multimedia tasks, even if it’s not the best in class. In PCMark 8 Work Conventional, the Alienware 15 scored 3,206 points, outperforming the MSI GE62 Apache (3,099 points) and even the Acer Aspire V 15 Nitro (VN7-591G-75S2) (3,160 points), but the HP Omen 15 edged ahead with 3,400 points.
Review: 3. Asus ROG G751JY-DH72X – Price: ($2,999 as tested) ” Asus G751 vs Msi gt72”
The Asus ROG G751 is now available in Malaysia and Singapore at the starting RRP of RM8499 and SGD2898)
The quad-core Intel Core i7-4860HQ processor runs at 2.4GHz stock speed. Asus includes overclocking utilities to tweak performance of the CPU and GPU, but we tested the system in the stock configuration.
The Nvidia GeForce GTX 980M graphics processor helped the desktop score playable frame rates on our Heaven (55 frames per second) and Valley (59fps) gaming tests at extreme-quality settings at full 1080p resolution. That was a lot smoother than competitors like the Alienware 17 (2014), the Asus ROG G750JZ-XS72, and the Origin EON17-S.
The only other competitor we’ve seen lately that can play at extreme levels smoothly is the $3,676 (as tested) Origin EON17-SLX (2014), which has two Nvidia GeForce GTX 780M GPUs to help with the heavy lifting. The 3DMark scores are likewise close, with the G751JY-DH72X scoring 4,324 points on the Fire Strike Extreme test, just behind the 4,932 points of the Origin EON17-SLX on the same test.
Review: 4. MSI GT72 Dominator Pro G-1438 – Price: “Depending on Configuration”
The MSI GT72 Dominator Pro is now available in Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, and the Philippines. Prices vary depending on configuration.
The fifth-generation Intel Core i7-5700HQ processor and Nvidia GeForce GTX 980M GPU work together well on the game grid. They helped the system produce smoothly playable frame rates of 52 frames per second (fps) on the Heaven test and 57fps on the Valley test, even when pushed to Ultra-quality settings at the display’s native 1080p resolution.
It was a lot smoother than systems like the Maingear Pulse 15, the MSI G60 Ghost Pro 3K, and the Razer Blade (2015), all three of which displayed less-than-playable frame rates on the same tests.
Review:5. HP Omen 15 – Price: ($2,099.99 as tested) ” HP Omen vs Alienware 15″
The HP Omen 15 is available in Malaysia and Singapore at the starting RRP of RM6,999 and SGD2,299 respectively)
The Omen 15 is outfitted with an Intel Core i7-4710HQ processor, overclocked from 2.5GHz to up to 3.5GHz in Turbo mode. It’s the same quad-core processor used in the Acer Aspire V 15 Nitro and the Maingear Pulse 15.
With 16GB of RAM, and aforementioned PCI-connected SSD, the Omen 15 manages to squeeze better overall performance out of the same CPU, scoring 3,400 points in PCMark 8 Work Conventional, where the Acer V 15 Nitro scored only 3,160 points, and the Maingear Pulse 15 scored 3,047 points.
Similar performance differences were seen in Photoshop CS6, which the Omen 15 finished in just 3 minutes 24 seconds, well ahead of most competing systems. The real question, however, is gaming performance. With an Nvidia GeForce GTX 860M GPU and 4GB of dedicated memory, the Omen offers decent gaming performance, slightly ahead of the similarly equipped Acer V 15 Nitro and the Lenovo Y50 Touch, which also feature the Nvidia GTX 860M.
In 3DMark the Omen 15 scored 15,651 points (CloudGate), and 1,840 points (FireStrike). In gaming tests with basic 1,366-by-768 resolution, the Omen cranked through Heaven at 66 frames per second (fps) and Valley at 79 fps; at 1,920-by-1,080 resolution with antialiasing on, those rates dropped to 22fps in Heaven and 25fps in Valley, meaning that you can play current-generation games at full HD, but you may need to back off on the eye-candy for smooth performance.
This performance is all quite respectable, but the Nvidia GTX 860M is an entry-level gaming GPU, and at this price range, you might also consider that the Maingear Pulse 15 and the Digital Storm Krypton offered slightly better gaming performance, thanks to an Nvidia 870M and 880M, respectively.

2015 Top Demanding Graphic Games for Laptop
Predicted Ultra System Requirements 2015/16 – We’ve looked at where the trends seem to be going in order to estimate the specs of a rig to run the big games of 2015. Of course, as we saw with Watch Dogs, PC game optimisation can be pretty bad; there were those who struggled for a consistent frame rate, even using the likes of the GTX 780Ti. Dire optimisation aside.
However, these are the future PC game system requirements we think will run demanding 2015 ultra graphics settings while ensuring satisfactory frame rates.
