The Alaska Aces needed a late run in overtime to hold off a gritty Barangay Ginebra San Miguel squad, 109-100, and post their first win in the PBA Governors’ Cup Sunday night at SMART-Araneta Coliseum.
Import LaDontae Henton finished with 29 points and nine boards to spearhead the Aces who lost a 15-point lead against the hard-fighting Gin Kings but unleashed a 13-4 run in overtime to ice the win.
Chris Banchero chipped in 17 points and five steals, while RJ Jazul contributed 14 markers and four triples for Alaska which improved to 1-1.
Calvin Abueva scored a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds in his first game of the conference.
Ginebra’s new import Justin Brownlee finished with 31 points and 13 rebounds in his PBA debut but had to battle cramps late in the game.
Sol Mercado added 22 points, while LA Tenorio had 14 markers for Ginebra which slipped to 1-1.
Alaska had seemed to pull away after grabbing a 40-25 lead midway through the second quarter.
But Ginebra slowly shaved the deficit, staying within striking distance from the Aces for the rest of the game. The Gin Kings cut it to seven, 53-46, at the half .
Alaska had an answer to every Ginebra run, but the Gin Kings didn’t give up and continued their climb until the fourth quarter.
Ginebra was then forced to go all-Filipino in the final frame after Brownlee sat out due to cramps. The Gin Kings however still put up a fight and was able to make it a ballgame.
