The TNT KaTropa secured the No. 1 seed after closing out the Oppo PBA Governors’ Cup elimination round with a big 104-92 victory over Barangay Ginebra on Sunday in Binan, Laguna.
Import Mychal Ammons posted 24 points and 16 rebounds in a big effort for TNT, which wrapped up their campaign with a 10-1 record after four consecutive wins.
Jayson Castro added 19 points and 10 assists while Asian import Micahel Madanly had 18 points and eight boards. Larry Fonacier also had a big game with 14 markers. Those three combined to hit 10 of TNT’s 13 three-pointers in the victory.
Ginebra, which entered the game with a shot at the No. 1 seed, dropped down to 8-3.
TNT led 43-35 at the halftime break behind strong offensive showing from Ammons, who scored 12 points, and Fonacier, who had eight.
Castro and Madanly came out of the break shooting fire from beyond the arc. They each knocked down two triples as the KaTropa pushed their lead up to 16 big points, 67-51, after a huge start to the quarter.
Ginebra, though, managed to fight its way back to within 12 by the end of the third.
TNT then fired off a huge run to start the fourth with Castro, Madanly and Ammons all scoring and Ranidel De Ocampo again draining from long range. That 9-0 run made it a 21-point game with nine minutes left in the game. They led by as many as 22 points, 92-70, in the fourth quarter.
But Ginebra import Justin Brownlee put up a terrific stand in the fourth quarter, where he scored 16 of his 34 points, to keep the Kings’ hopes alive. Scottie Thompson made two free throws to bring them within single digits, 99-90, but only had 1:15 left on the clock.
