The Boomers have emerged as a fan-favourite heading into the semi-finals, with the team’s ball and player movement exciting the entire basketball community.

In a group that featured gold medal favourites USA, along with international powerhouses France and Serbia, Australia was expected to be faced with an extremely tough test. Instead, the Boomers have emerged as one of the tournament’s most revered teams, en route to a second-place finish in Group A.

Australia’s first win was led by Andrew Bogut, who put on a near-perfect performance against a talented French line-up. It was Matthew Dellavedova who put on the near-perfect performance in the Boomers’ second game – a win over Serbia – finishing with an efficient 23 points and 13 assists; one of the tournament’s best individual performances.

After two impressive wins, the Boomers came up against Team USA, and while the Aussies lost by a mere 10 points, the inspiring performance saw Australia emerge as a legitimate medal contender.

Two easy wins over China and Venezuela rounded out Australia’s group games, earning the No. 2 spot in Group A, only behind Team USA.

The Boomers’ quarter-final matchup was against Lithuania, and behind an impressive shooting performance from Patty Mills, Australia made easy work of their opponent.

Mills remains second in the tournament in scoring – averaging 21.2 points per game – while Dellavedova leads the tournament in assists; averaging 7.7 dimes, to go with his 10.3 points per game.
