The Meralco Bolts got off to an electric start and never looked back as they cruised past Rain or Shine, 109-102, in the Oppo PBA Governors’ Cup on Wednesday at the SMART Araneta Coliseum.
Meralco rattled off 16 unanswered points to open the game with import Allen Durham and Chris Newsome setting the tone with eight points apiece.
But Meralco, aided by some fine play from Baser Amer in transition, closed out the half on a huge 11-0 blast to restore order.
They led 65-47 at the halftime break with Durham already tallying 20 points and seven rebounds over the first two periods. Newsome had 12 in the first half.
The Bolts were able to push their advantage to a high of 26 points, 91-65, after a couple of threes from Alapag and Dillinger in the third quarter.
That lead stood at 19 points with three minutes left in the game even as Rain or Shine mounted a surprising last-ditch run that was too little and too late in the endgame.
