The San Miguel Beermen cruised to victory over the Phoenix Fuel Masters, 124-113, in a high-scoring PBA Governors’ Cup clash on Sunday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.
Arizona Reid posted 41 points, 10 rebounds, four assists and two blocks while June Mar Fajardo added 21 points and 11 rebounds for the Beermen.
Alex Cabagnot added 20 points, including three three-pointers and Marcio Lassiter added 12 markers in the game.
The teams exchanged some big runs in the first half. San Miguel made the first big surge with a 9-0 run in the first quarter, including a huge fourth-point play and another three-ball from Alex Cabagnot.
Phoenix, though, chipped at that lead and eventually came back to within four points, 33-29, at the end of the first thanks to a buzzer-beating three from Ronjay Buenafe.
The Beermen again gained some separation early in the second as they took a 42-31 lead.
But the Fuel Masters then responded with huge rally. Import Marcus Simmons began to take over as the team rattled off nine unanswered points to tie the game at 42-all and Mark Cruz, Norbert Torres and Simmons knocked down triples as they made a huge 22-point turnaround, going from 11 points down to taking an 11-point lead, 67-56.
Phoenix ended the high-scoring first half with a 69-64 lead.
Simmons had 18 points and six rebounds while Cyrus Baguio had 11 points and six assists for Phoenix in the first half while San Miguel was led by Reid, who had 19 points.
The Fuel Masters pushed their lead up to double figures in the third, but another big run, this time from the Beermen’s side, changed the course of the game yet again.
San Miguel closed the third quarter on a 13-0 run, the last nine of those from Reid, as they not only erased the Phoenix lead, but moved ahead by four points, 97-93.
The Beermen led by double figures for a good part of the fourth quarter.
