Unfortunately…. By Norm Frauenheim-
Hanzel Martinez suffered undisclosed injuries in a reported auto accident Wednesday night, forcing him to withdraw from a main event Friday night at Tucson’s Casino Del Sol on a card televised by the CBS Sports Network.
Martinez, 23-2 with 18 KOs as a junior featherweight, was reported to have been involved in the accident while leaving Tijuana, Mexico, on his way to Tucson.
Martinez, a former brother-in-law to Antonio Margarito, was scheduled to face Posper Ankrah (24-7, 15 KOs) of Ghana.
With Martinez-Ankrah off the Roy Jones Jr.-promoted card (11 p.m. ET/8 p.m. PT), the main event will feature junior welterweight Emmanuel Robles (14-0-1, 4 KOs) against Gerardo Cuevas (17-15-1, 15 KOs).
In another Arizona card Friday night, Phoenix super-bantamweight Panchito De Vaca (14-0 4 KOs) faces Gustavo Molina (22-11, 9 KOs) for a NABF junior title at Celebrity Theatre in Phoenix. The Iron Boy Promotions card is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
With less than a day to go before his CBS Sports televised fight for the NABA-USA super bantamweight title, Hanzel Martinez (23-2, 18 KOs) was forced to drop out of the card due to serious injuries received after a traffic accident in Tijuana yesterday. Martinez was slated to fight Prosper Ankrah (24-7, 15 KOs) but will be out of commission due to neck and back injuries suffered during this accident.
“Roy Jones Jr. Boxing wishes our fighter Hanzel Martinez a healthy and speedy recovery,” RJJ Boxing said in a press release. “Hanzel is very disappointed that after a nine week training camp he can’t perform. Our main concern, of course, is Hanzel’s safety and well being. We can’t wait to get Hanzel back into the ring and what he loves to do the most.”
Despite the last minute cancellation of the main event, the card will continue tonight with undercard fighters Emmanuel “Renegade” Robles (14-0-1, 4 KOs) and local boy Keenan Carbajal in separate bouts.
