SMB escapes NLEX in 3 OTs as imports Wilkerson, Thornton total 127 points in wild duel, San Miguel import Tyler Wilkerson and NLEX reinforcement Al Thornton put on an incredible show as they tallied a whopping total of 127 points between them in a wild and entertaining triple-overtime affair that the Beermen won, 131-127, on Tuesday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.

Thornton scored 69 big points while Wilkerson had 58 but it was the latter walking out the happier of the two as his team came away with the win.

San Miguel improved to 6-3 for the 2016 Oppo PBA Commissioner’s Cup while dropped to 5-5.

Alex Cabagnot scored 20 points and dished out 12 assists while June Mar Fajardo added 18 points and 16 rebounds for the Beermen. Arwind Santos and Marcio Lassiter also reached double figures in scoring with 15 and 11, respectively.

But it was the imports that stole the show in this one as they dominated scoring.

Thornton scored his 69 on 26-of-47 (55-percent) shooting. He chipped in 39 of those in the fourth quarter and three overtimes. He also grabbed 19 rebounds.

Wilkerson, meanwhile, had his 58 on a 20-for-35 (57-percent) shooting clip. He scored 11 points in the extra period including back-to-back baskets in the third OT that gave San Miguel a 129-123 lead heading into the final stretch.

The game started off relatively even although San Miguel quickly changed that as it went on a huge 17-2 run to close the first quarter.

Wilkerson was aggressive in the opening period, scoring 13 points – including three dunks – to pace the Beermen. Santos also played well, hitting two triples from off the bench.

They led, 30-16, after the first period.

The lead went up 16 points in the second quarter but behind some increased pace and the solid play of Thornton and Sean Anthony, NLEX was able to cut it down to seven, 39-32, after a 12-3 run.

The Road Warriors didn’t help their cause, though, as both coach Boyet Fernandez and Anthony were whistled for technicals for complaining calls, slowing their momentum.

Anthony’s tech led to a free throw for Wilkerson, who followed that up with an offensive rebound and a big dunk on the extra possession. After Thornton missed on the other end, Wilkerson came back down and drained a three-pointer, restoring the lead to a comfortable 13 points, 45-32.

NLEX was whistled for a third technical foul minutes later, this time for improper bench decorum.

Still, the Road Warriors managed to trim their deficit yet again.

NLEX plugged away in the third as they inched to as close as two points, 72-70, after an 11-4 run.

But San Miguel responded by forcing some turnovers and turning it into easy baskets on the other end. Chris Ross started it off by streaking to the other end for an and-one on the break. Wilkerson followed it with a three-point play of his own, drawing a foul on Thornton.

Ross then found a wide-open Wilkerson for an uncontested dunk in transition, making it a double-digit margin, 80-70.

Thornton, though, hit a triple right before the third quarter ended, putting his team’s deficit at seven, 80-73.

Wilkerson’s total was up to 38 points after the third while Thornton had 30.

Fajardo, though, gave San Miguel a much-needed lift in the third OT, scoring the team’s first seven points as they jumped out to a 125-120 lead.

Thornton hit a three-pointer to get up to 67 points but Wilkerson responded with back-to-back baskets, making it 129-123 for San Miguel. The SMB import upped his own total to 58.

But Thornton drove hard to the hoop and Anthony struck on a follow-up to bring NLEX back to within two, 129-127.

Lassiter, though, finally put an end to it by knocking down two free throws and NLEX could not find an answer.
