Blackwater barges PBA recap full 2016 win column after beating expansion rival Mahindra. The Blackwater Elite picked up their first win of the conference after outdueling the Mahindra Enforcers, 110-102, in the 2015 Oppo PBA Commissioner’s Cup on Valentine’s Day Sunday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.
Carlo Lastimosa, who scored a career-high 39 points in the Elite’s conference opener, put forth a solid encore, finishing with a team-high 26 points and six rebounds in this one.
Reil Cervantes added 24 points – 18 of those in a terrific fourth quarter performance for the Blackwater forward. Rookie Art Dela Cruz also had a strong showing, scoring 19 points on 8-for-13 (61%) showing as well as four steals. Cervantes and Dela Cruz combined to make six three-pointers.
Blackwater import MJ Rhett had 19 points and 18 rebounds while Mahindra’s Augustus Gilchrist posted 34 points and 14 rebounds in the matchup of reinforcements.
It was Blackwater’s second win over Mahindra this season after winning their head-to-head matchup in the Philippine Cup last conference. The two teams entered the league as expansion teams together last season.
Blackwater surged ahead early after Dela Cruz scored back-to-back baskets to spark a 12-2 first quarter run for the Elite. Mike Cortez and Cervantes capped that rally with three-pointers to give the Elite a double-digit lead, 24-14.
But Mahindra owned the second quarter on the strength of its outside shooting. KG Canaleta erupted for the Enforcers, knocking down triples on three consecutive possessions – including one where he completed a four-point play – while Chito Jaime and Hyram Bagatsing also connected from the outside as they made it a 10-point lead the other way, 49-39, late in the second period.
Mahindra led, 49-43, at halftime.
Dela Cruz again came up big in the third period, where he scored eight points, including two three-pointers. He also played stellar defense, coming up with four big steals as Blackwater came back to retake the lead, 77-75.
Cervantes came up huge in the fourth quarter. He scored six of Blackwater’s first eight points before accounting for eight more in a decisive 10-1 run late in the period. He knocked down two three-pointers while Dela Cruz connected on another as the Elite rattled off nine unanswered points to take a 102-91 advantage right at the last two-minute mark.
Some steady free throw shooting from Lastimosa kept Blackwater comfortably ahead in the endgame.
Karl Dehesa finished with 14 points while Canaleta had 13.
