Alaska 1 win away to catch 2015 Philippine cup Championship after beaten SMB game 3 82-75. The Alaska Aces took a commanding 3-0 lead, coming to within a single win of the SMART BRO PBA Philippine Cup, after defeating San Miguel, 82-75, in Game 3 on Friday at the Quezon Convention Center in Lucena City, Quezon.
Vic Manuel, who has been stellar in the championship series, once again led Alaska with a team-high 17 points and seven boards while his frontcourt partner, Calvin Abueva, chipped in with 13 markers.
The Aces, which entered the fourth quarter trailing, outscored the Beermen, 27-17, to clinch the victory.
SMB, still playing without injured star center June Mar Fajardo, the reigning back-to-back PBA MVP, was led by backup big man JR Reyes with 13 points. Ronald Tubid was the only other Beerman in double figures with 10.
San Miguel led by three points heading into the fourth quarter but they caught a bad break when Reyes was whistled for a flagrant foul penalty two after swinging his elbows following a rebound and knocking Manuel square on the jaw. He was tossed with 9:32 still left to play.
Alaska took advantage, going on a 7-0 run a few minutes later, to take a four-point advantage, 72-68. Abueva connected on a triple from the left corner and Manuel made back-to-back baskets – the first on a transition play and the second on a jump hook off a post-up.
Arwind Santos, who had been struggling from long range, came up huge with a four-point play, tying the game at 72-apiece before the two teams traded huge defensive plays as Sonny Thoss blocked an attempt from Santos and Marcio Lassiter chasing down Ping Exciminiano on the break for an emphatic swat on the other end.
Alex Cabagnot managed to give San Miguel its last taste of the lead after scoring off a pinpoint inbound pass from Lassiter, 75-74.
But Alaska rattled off eight unanswered points to close the contest, kicked off by a pair of baskets from RJ Jazul and finished off by free throws courtest of Thoss and Casio.
