Jayson Castro provided the heroics in the end-game, scoring five straight points to help the Talk ‘N Text Tropang Texters fend off the Star Hotshots, 91-86, in SMART BRO PBA Philippine Cup action Saturday at Quezon Convention Center in Lucena.
Castro finished with 33 points and made the most crucial baskets down the stretch as Talk ‘N Text (3-1) notched its third straight win of the season.
With Talk “N Text holding on to an 83-82 lead with just one minute left, Castro carried the Tropang Texters, burying a cold-blooded triple, then getting a steal on the other and scoring a layup to push his team’s lead to six, 88-82, with 39.9 seconds left.
No.1 rookie pick Moala Tautuaa then punctuated the win with a breakaway jam after a steal to push Talk ‘N Text’s lead, 90-82.
Star, which had come back from a 10-point second half deficit, then threatened for one more rally. James Yap scored a quick layup off a timeout before Marc Pingris got a steal from a Tropang Texters inbound that led to two made free throws.
Those baskets towed Star closer, 90-86, with just 14 seconds remaining. But after a free throw split by the Tropang Texters, Star didn’t have enough time to complete its comeback.
With the result, Star settled for a 2-3 record.
