PBA Philippine Cup Brgy. Ginebra vs NLEX December 13, 2015 replay Sunday, Game Match-up venue held in Smart Araneta Coliseum @ 5:00 pm.
The Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings showed a little of the never-say-die attitude they’re known for in an epic comeback from 22 points down that resulted in a 91-90 victory in the SMART BRO PBA Philippine Cup on Sunday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.
Ginebra trailed, 75-53, late in the third quarter before its second unit, led by rookie Scottie Thompson, put up a furious fight to get back into the game and eventually take the lead for the first time with just 10.4 seconds left in the game.
Thompson scored 14 points – all of them after NLEX established its huge lead – to lead the Ginebra comeback. He scored 10 in the fourth quarter, including the two free throws that put the Kings on top, 91-90, in the endgame.
Greg Slaughter had a huge double-double with 18 points and 15 rebounds while Japeth Aguilar had 12 points, seven boards and four assists. Chris Ellis and Dave Marcelo, who were big parts of the late Ginebra rally, also reached double figures with 11 and 10, respectively.
NLEX held a comfortable eight-point advantage, 49-41, in the first half.
Rookie Garvo Lanete, who had an explosive performance in the second period which included a rare four-point play, and Asi Taulava both had nine points to pace the Road Warriors.
Slaughter already had a double-double in the first half with 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Kings. Aguilar added 10 points, five rebounds and four assists.
NLEX blew the game wide open in the third, though. Jonas Villanueva scored some second chance points and then set up Taulava inside to open a dizzying 19-4 run that turned what was a seven-point game into a 22-point contest.
Sean Anthony scored nine points in the third period, including a strong finish in transition that made it 75-53 for the Road Warriors. Taulava added six points, all inside the paint, as NLEX extended its lead.
But Ginebra coach Tim Cone then found an interesting unit that brought the team back in the fourth quarter.
Leaning heavily on the aggressive play of Thompson, the midrange game of Marcelo and some outside sniping from Ellis, the Kings mounted a big-time counterattack with their starters glued to the bench.
Thompson and Marcelo scored all of the team’s points as they closed the third on a 6-0 run. The Kings then mounted a 24-4 run in the fourth quarter that erased all of a 20-point Road Warriors lead.
That Ginebra trio combined to score 28 of the team’s 30 points from the 1:23 mark of the third period to the 4:14 mark of the fourth as they tied the game at 83-apiece.
The two teams exchanged baskets in the next few minutes with Villanueva hitting an important three-pointer at the 1:45 mark that put NLEX ahead, 90-87 game match-up highlights and replay here.
Slaughter responded on the other end with a putback off a missed three from Jayjay Helterbrand, putting Ginebra right back to within one point, 90-89. He also had a huge block that set up a fastbreak opportunity for the Kings, which resulted in two free throws for Thompson that finally put them ahead, 91-90, with just 10.4 left on the clock.
With the win, Ginebra bolstered its chances of finishing in the top six by moving up to 6-4. They are currently in fifth place, ahead of TNT (5-4) and Barako Bull (5-5). NLEX, meanwhile, slipped to 4-6 although they are already assured of a place in the quarterfinal round as well.
